SPEAK UP! Canada Storytellers
March 9–14, 2026 on Zoom
Storytelling and prose share a common purpose. Both are literature art forms that create the opportunity to share experiences, ideas, or events through a narrative structure (characters, plot, setting). They entertain, educate, preserve culture, or inspire an audience. Join us for an event where we can share wonderful stories with others and gain experience through performance. The more voices we have, the stronger we get.
One entry per class per speaker; maximum 3 entries per speaker.
Class 1 – Tell a Story
Time limit: 4 minutes
Share a story – in your own words, in your own way, rehearsed but not memorized. Notes or an outline are useful for preparation but should not be used while sharing. Begin with a very brief introduction explaining your connection to the story.
- Myth, folk or fairy tale from any culture
- Original story – make up a story to tell aloud
- Personal experience story – something that happened to YOU
- A family story – stories told in your family
- 3 riddles, dialogue joke, or brief ‘story’ joke (for students under 9)
- Story that prompted the poem – tell why you like it or wrote it; include the poem if it fits the time limit
Class 2 – Canadian Prose Reading
Time limit: maximum 4 minutes
Present prepared prose written by a Canadian author. Memorization is encouraged, but not essential. Use the exact words of the author. Set the scene with a simple introduction – this will be included in the time allotted.
- Please respect time limits
- Use of dialogue skills and vocal characterization is encouraged
- Shape the story to help the audience follow
- No copies required
- Non-Canadian authors permitted with introduction explaining why you like it as a Canadian!
Class 3 – Canadian Quick Study
Passages provided via email approx. 48 hours ahead
You’ll get a short passage of prose suitable to your age, written by a Canadian author. Practice ahead to be able to read it to the audience with expression, fluency and eye contact. Discussion may include skills and content.
No title necessary – put N/A on registration form.
- Print the passage, or have it ready on a separate device
- Use study time to check pronunciation and word meaning
- Make it interesting for the audience and enjoy it along with them
